One of only three counties in the state with its own asphalt plant, the Washington County Highway Department employs 100 people and uses 276 pieces of equipment to maintain 900 miles of county roads. All through roads and the majority of dead ends in Washington County are recently paved. Very few counties in the nation can make such a claim.

In addition to maintaining county highways, the Highway Department also makes low-cost paving available to the Town of Jonesborough and the county school system.

2006 Highway statistics:

  • 25.155 miles of county roads paved.

  • 69.93 miles of county roads striped.

  • 36,366 tons of hot mix asphalt on roadway.

  • $15,467.00 spent on Sign Installation.

  • $13,799.60 spent on Guard Rail Installation.

  • 2 paving projects for EMS (Gray and Fall Branch locations), and paving projects for JC Park & Rec., Joneborough Walking Trail and Harmony Convenience Center.

  • six paving projects for Town of Jonesborough.

  • 786.60 feet of guard rail installed.
